A.

Choose five of the following lines to begin five stanzas of a poem that will connect in a stream of consciousness sort of way. Let each line lead to the invention of something fantastic and dream-like. Be open to a variety of possibilities. Be open to where your mind first takes you... and where it may take you next...
1) I enter a room
2) There is a stairway leading
3) I am flying
4) The journey lies ahead
5) I am lost
6) There is a face at the window
7) IO have lost something
8) There is a strange land ahead
9) The door is closed
10) I hear the sound of running water

B.

Retell your favorite myth, folktale, or fairytale. Find one that can be told in terms of your own life. Are you Icarus, who wanted to fly but went to high? Do you think of yourself as Cindarella or Sleeping Beauty or Prince Charming? What beanstalk have you had to climb lately? Do not be afraid of an ironic twist. Perhaps your sympathy lies with wicked stepmothers, stepsisters, and witches, who may have been misunderstood.

C.

Make a map of your psychic landscape. What are the landmarks? What are the landforms? Are there roads, mountains, bodies of water? Name them according to particular problems, experiences, people, and so forth. Consider four figures to be identified with the four directions of the compass. who or what would they be, and why? Finally, what is the place called?

D.

Do you have any recurring dreams? Write a poem in which you explore the meaning of such a dream in concrete language/imagery, both dream-like and self-like.
