History
Jay Trisolino was a very active and beloved member of the community. He wrote, directed and
starred in many plays;wrote volumes of poetry; sang; traveled the world; was a professional
tailor; and was even an ambassador for a time.
Although Jay Trisolino has passed away, his spirit and memory continue to live on in the
hearts of those who knew him. Because he was such a positive influence on the community,
this Award has been established in his honor.
Prizes For Each Category
- 1st Place: $75.00, free membership to the Utica Writers Club for the 2007 - 2008
season, winning piece published in annual Utica Writers Club Publication, copy of publication.
- 2nd Place: $50.00, free membership to the Utica Writers Club for the 2007 - 2008
season, winning piece published in annual Utica Writers Club Publication, copy of publication.
- Most Original Topic: $25.00, 50% off first year's membership, winning piece
published in annual Utica Writers Club Publication, copy of publication.
- First Honorable Mention: 50% off first year's membership, winning piece published in
annual Utica Writers Club Publication, copy of publication.
- Second Honorable Mention: 50% off first year's membership, winning piece published
in annual Utica Writers Club Publication, copy of publication.

- Seasoned Poets (for those aged 18 years or older)
- Student Poets (for those aged 17 years or younger)
Submission Guidelines
We will begin accepting entries for the Jay Trisolino Poetry Contest on February 1, 2007,
with a deadline of March 3, 2007. Winners will be determined by vote among a panel of
judges.

Please note which category you will be submitting for, and please include the appropriate entry
fee ($5 per poem for Seasoned Poets or $2 per poem for Student Poets).
Restrictions & Limitations
- Poets may not submit more than two poems.
- Entries should not be more than 1,000 words.
- Utica Writers Club members are not allowed to compete in this contest.
- Submissions cannot be returned.
- Copyrights are retained by the individual authors.
- Only original poems will be accepted.
Reception
All winners, submitters, and the public in general are invited to our reception, which will be
held at the North Utica Community Center on May 16, 2007. Those in attendance will have the
opportunity to mingle and network with peers and professionals, be awarded their prizes.
Select members will read the winning poems, as well as one of Jay Trisolino's poems. Snacks
and beverages will be provided.

History
The Milton & Harriet Shatraw Writing Award dates back to the very beginnings of the Club, and
is named for two former members.
Prizes
First prize for both categories will be at least $50, publication in the contest
booklet (all rights remain with the writer), and a full one year membership in the Utica
Writers Club.
Prize money for second and third place will be determined by the number of entries received.
The winners' stories (and selected stories for honorable mention) will be read at a formal
reception at a date and location yet to be determined.
Current Utica Writers Club members are not eligible to compete in this contest.
Submission Guidelines
Please mail disposable manuscripts to the physical address listed here since we are not
accepting electronic entries at this time. Be sure to indicate which category you wish your
entry to be judged as. If there is no indication, it will be assumed that the piece belongs
in the adult category.
Categories:
- Adult (17 years old or older)
- Youth (16 years old or younger, as of January 31 of the contest year)
Genre:
There is no limitation on genre: mystery, romance, contemporary, horror, speculative fiction,
and historical fiction and any other genre imaginable are welcomed so long as they are
written well.
Length:
No more than 2,500 words.
Entry Fees:
$3.00 for Youth Fiction
$5.00 for Adult Fiction
Judging:
Judges will be members of the Utica Writers Club.

Your chances of submitting a winning piece, whether poetry or prose, will be greatly increased
if you adhere to the following guidelines:
- Use spell check
- Proofread your work
- Read your work out loud so you can hear it
- Listen to your work as it is read out loud by someone else
- If you are going to submit handwritten works, please make sure they are legible!
